Periodic Mesoporous Organosilica

Periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs) are an advanced class of organic-inorganic hybrid materials. The PMOs are typically prepared by the hydrolysis and condensation of at least one bridged organosilane precursor [(R’O)3Si-R-Si(OR’)3] in the presence of a suitable surfactant as a structure-directing agent (SDA) under either acidic or basic conditions. Thanks to the high surface area, tunable pore size and diameter, high loading of organic functional groups, and easy functionalization of the inner surface and outer particles, PMOs have attracted much attention in the fields of catalysis.

Hollow Mesoporous Silica/Organosilica Sphere

Although a plethora of bulk mesoporous silicas/organosilicas functionalized by the desired catalyst has been reported so far, synthesis of the mesoporous catalyst with well-defined morphology such as spherical, hollow spheres, core-shell and hierarchical structures in the nanoscale domain, has continued to be a challenge. Among these structures, hollow sphere materials are considered as superior candidates for designing highly efficient catalytic systems for gas-phase reactions due to their capability for gas molecule up-taking and followed by enhancement of gas retention time around centers where the catalyst is located. Currently, we are conducting some research on introducing new hollow mesoporous catalysts for carbon dioxide valorization.

CO2 Capture and Conversion

In recent years, human activities, the rapid growth of industrialization, and especially the uncontrolled combustion of fossil fuels have unfortunately resulted in the increase of atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide, as a component of greenhouse gases. The long-term effects of this trend have ensued global warming, ice melting, ocean warming, sea-level rising, and ocean acidification which are overall defined as global climate change. Consequently, the development of new carbon capture and utilization systems which was able to minimize carbon dioxide emissions has become the hottest topic in the scientific communities. In this regard, we currently focused on designing new porous catalysts for the conversion of carbon dioxide to the value-added products.
