Quick statistic for files in a data bank?

• As Geophysicists, we observe earth parameters and keep our observations in large data banks which are often made of large number of files. For example, continuous seismic waveforms from different stations are recorded in different directories under name of each station. Each station directory holds different subdirectories for each year. Each year subdirectory is consisted of 12 month subdirectory. Continuous waveform data is kept in each month subdirectory usually as separate one hour files. For a single station and for one year period, we are dealing with 365 by 24 individual files! We should be able to extract our required statistics, and data from such large data bank!
