Optical Metrology Group
Overview
The Optical Metrology Group (OMG) at IASBS is a hands-on, research-driven team dedicated to advancing precision optical measurement and imaging. Our group combines experimental particularity with innovative approaches to develop cutting-edge instruments and techniques for surface profiling, holographic microscopy, and biomedical imaging. We emphasize collaborative, practical learning: members actively engage in experiments, prototype development, and data analysis. Weekly group meetings provide a platform for sharing progress, discussing challenges, and planning upcoming projects. Whether you are a researcher, student, or collaborator, OMG provides a dynamic environment where ideas are transformed into tangible results. Group Meetings: Sunday 4:00 PM
Venue: Torkaman Hall

Ehsan A. Akhlaghi
Dr. Ehsan A. Akhlaghi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Sciences (IASBS), Zanjan, Iran, and the founder and director of the Optical Metrology Group (OMG). He earned his B.Sc. in Solid State Physics from the University of Tehran (2003), M.Sc. in Optics from the University of Zanjan (2006), and Ph.D. in Optics from IASBS (2011). Since establishing OMG in 2012, he has focused on integrating fundamental optical science with practical applications in biomedical imaging, industrial metrology, and advanced optical instrumentation. His research interests span optical metrology, 3D imaging and microscopy, super-resolution microscopy, digital holography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), diffractive optics, structured light generation, biomedical imaging and spectroscopy, image processing, and microfabrication. He has designed and implemented high-precision optical systems for both fundamental studies and applied research, including surface profiling, quantitative phase imaging, and optical biosensing.
Beyond academia, Dr. Akhlaghi is the co-founder and managing director of Fath Noor Mihan (FathOptics), co-founder of Engareh Physics Toos Knowledge-Based Company, and COO of Interactive Intelligent Process Automation Inc. His industrial collaborations have resulted in the development of knowledge-based instruments such as optical profilometers, spectrometers, spatial light modulators, and nano-positioners, supporting applications in precision manufacturing, biomedical diagnostics, and environmental monitoring. He has supervised numerous Ph.D. and M.Sc. theses in advanced optical imaging, spectroscopy, and applied photonics, and has published in leading journals such as Optics Express, Optics Letters, and Scientific Reports. His achievements include recognition as the Top Technologist of Zanjan Province (2018).
