Workshop

Mini-course on InSAR Processing

The goal of this short course is to train students in the methods and practices of InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar). InSAR is a powerful tool for measuring Earth surface deformation due to earthquakes, volcanic unrest, ground water migration, and anthropogenic activity. This workshop will focus on the fundamentals of InSAR, basic processing and applications for new users, the knowledge gained should prepare attendees to better understand and utilize the newer techniques. A brief introduction to InSAR time series will be included.

The workshops will be held on before TRIGGER conference, Zanjan, Iran on the following dates:

SNAP-Toolbox: 5-6 October 2019

GMTSAR: 7 October 2019

The official language of the workshop is English.

Computers and Data

Participants will be expected to know basic Linux command line usage.

Participants should bring their own laptop computer with at least 6 Gbytes of memory and 50 Gbytes of free disk space.

SNAP (Sentinel-1 Toolbox)

The Sentinel-1 Toolbox (S1TBX) consists of a collection of processing tools, data product readers and writers and a display and analysis application to support the large archive of data from ESA SAR missions including SENTINEL-1, ERS-1 & 2 and ENVISAT, as well as third party SAR data from ALOS PALSAR, TerraSAR-X, COSMO-SkyMed and RADARSAT-2. The various processing tools could be run independently from the command-line and also integrated within the graphical user interface. The Toolbox includes tools for calibration, speckle filtering, coregistration, orthorectification, mosaicking, data conversion, polarimetry and interferometry.

Computer code, documentation, and sample data sets for SNAP can be downloaded from the following sites:

GMTSAR

GMTSAR is an open source (GNU General Public License) InSAR processing system designed for users familiar with Generic Mapping Tools (GMT). The code is written in C and will compile on any computer where GMT and NETCDF are installed.

InSAR processing system designed for users familiar with the Generic Mapping Tools (GMT). The system has three main components: 1) a preprocessor for each satellite data type (e.g., ERS, Envisat, and ALOS) to convert the native format and orbital information into a generic format. 2) An InSAR processor to focus and align stacks of images, map topography into phase, and form the complex interferograms. 3) A postprocessor mostly based on GMT, to filter the interferogram and construct interferometric products of phase, coherence, phase gradient, and line-of-sight displacement in both radar and geographic coordinates. This workshop course will briefly cover the theory and application of InSAR processing. Computer code, documentation, and sample data sets can be downloaded from the following site: https://topex.ucsd.edu/gmtsar

Each student should try to install the GMTSAR software and run a few test examples PRIOR to the class. Additional help with software installation will be provided in the lab section.
