Pure Mathematics:

  • Algebra (Algebraic Geometry, Commutative Algebra, and Group Theory)

  • Analysis (Operators Theory, Approximation Theory, Nonlinear Analysis, and Optimisation)

  • Geometry (Differential Geometry and Mathematical Physics)

  • Graph Theory and Combinatorics (Algorithms and Combinatorics)

Applied Mathematics:

  • Numerical Analysis (Numerical Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and Wavelet Theory)

  • Financial Mathematics (Computational Finance, Systemic Risk, and Stochastic Optimal Control)

  • Optimisation (Network Design and Dynamic Network Flows)

  • Cryptography and Code (Cryptography and Cryptanalysis)

The Department of Mathematics has established joint PhD programmes with numerous international institutions, including the University of Bordeaux 1, Grenoble, Paris 6, Polytechnic University of Turin, Polytechnic University of Paris, Dalhousie University, the University of Duisburg-Essen, the University of Florence, Philipps-Universität Marburg, the University of Texas at El Paso, the University of the Aegean, the University of São Paulo, the University of Urbino (Italy), the Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences (ASSMS), Salahaddin University in Erbil, the Max Planck Institute in Germany, and others.
In addition, collaborative research and joint projects are actively pursued with institutions such as Paris-Saclay University (Paris-Orsay), the LRI Institute in France, the University of Genoa (Italy), the IMPA Institute (Brazil), the Alfred Rényi Institute (Hungary), the Institute for Computer Science and Automation (Hungary), the University of Rennes, Pablo de Olavide University (Spain), Zhejiang Normal University, the Autonomous University of Madrid, the University of Campinas, the University of Santiago de Compostela, the University of Catania, the Oberwolfach Research Institute for Mathematics, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU), Chalmers University of Technology, the University of Salerno, Halmstad University (Sweden), Brock University (Canada), the University of York (UK), East China Normal University, the University of Ottawa, the University of Halle (Germany), and several other institutions worldwide.
Faculty members and students regularly participate in international conferences and workshops. Researchers in the mathematical sciences are also invited for short-term stays and collaborative projects with IASBS faculty members. The department has organised several international workshops and conferences featuring the participation of renowned mathematicians from around the world.
