The Department of Earth Sciencess is one of the younger departments of IASBS. Currently we are active in the fields of geophysics, tectonics, Petrology and Hydrology and Hydrogeology. The geophysics group is dedicated to research and graduate education in the field of solid earth geophysics. We offer M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in geophysics that are both course- and research-oriented. Current fields of interest are the study of crustal structure of Iran with seismological methods, and deformation processes in the lithosphere with an emphasis on numerical modeling. Students take several courses covering all major branches of geophysics and are expected to undertake a research project that has to be defended at the end of their program. Individuals with a Bachelor's degree in Physics, Geology, Mathematics, and Engineering are eligible to apply.

We also offer an M.Sc. program in Structural Geology and Tectonics. Research in this branch is mainly concentrated on active tectonics in the Iranian plateau, the relationship between tectonics and erosion, and the study of ductile deformation.

The long-term goal of the Department is to expand into various branches of earth sciences and become a full-grown department. These branches will include Geology, Environmental sciences, Atmospheric sciences, Remote sensing and Geographical Information Science. For this purpose the Department is currently in the middle of a major recruitment program.
