IASBS holds Commencement Ceremony to welcome new students in 2024-2025 academic year

The Commencement Ceremony to welcome the new students in the 2024-2025 academic year has been held at the Physics Department Atrium. In this ceremony, which was held on 13 October 2024, the IASBS’s Acting President, Dr Sadollah Nasiri Gheydari, gave a welcoming speech saying that the IASBS was one of the top 10 universities in the country in terms of quality. He said despite its youth, the IASBS was a national brand in certain fields.

Addressing the new students, Dr Nasiri suggested that we should be grateful to God Almighty for blessing us by putting us on the path of learning and said education, research, innovation and learning were human indicators distinguishing them from other creatures.

He said the University of Bologna in Italy was known as the oldest university in the world until 2017 but that with the efforts of the National Commission of UNESCO in 2017, Gondishapour University came to be recognised by UNESCO as the first university established in the world being 1750 years old. Dr Nasiri pointed out the importance of the production of science and technology in building civilisations and the establishment of the Maragheh Observatory and 22 other observatories from the ninth to the 16th centuries by the Islamic civilisation, and that the Maragheh Observatory had been the most important observatory in the world for 300 years, concluding that the most important elements of success for the new students were perseverance in doing things, hope for the future, and adherence to ethics.

In the continuation of the Commencement Ceremony, the Vice President for Education and Research, Dr Zaare Nahandi, said unlike other universities in the country, the academic year at the IASBS is divided into terms rather than semesters necessitating a different set of requirements. He said not creating a gap between the body and the management of the university was one of the cultural requirements of this university. He emphasised that it was very important that everyone paid attention to and observed the rules and regulations of education and research. Dr Zaare concluded by saying that an important advantage at the IASBS was the students’ 24-hour access to the research laboratories and the use of the Library until 10 pm.

Then, the Vice President for Student and Sociocultural Affairs of the University, Dr Bastani, expressed his support for the students who entered the cultural arena in addition to scientific activities. Emphasising the need for the students to care for their mental and physical health, he enumerated the existing cultural centres and student facilities, including sports gymnasia, dining halls, cafeteria, and other amenities.

Finally, the founding Vice President of the IASBS and senior adjunct lecturer at the Department of Physics, Dr Khajapour, was asked to take the floor. He welcomed the new students and wished them success in a brief address saying that trusting the students was the key. At the end of the ceremony, the students took a group photo with the IASBS acting president, vice presidents, managers, and employees.
