An autumn afternoon with book lovers …

The sixth session of this season’s An Autumn Afternoon with Book Lovers has been held with the participation of a member of the Department of Computer Science, Dr Mohsen Houshmand, featuring an introduction to the contributions of Dr Iraj Afshar to Iranian culture.

The Grain of Wheat: A Brief Note on the Scholarly and Cultural Contributions of Iraj Afshar.

Iraj Afshar (1925–2010) was one of the most important contemporary scholars of Iranian studies and bibliography, who devoted a major part of his life to collecting and presenting Iran’s scientific and cultural heritage. His works included The List of Persian Articles, Wanderings in the Homeland, The Remarkable Ones, and Savaad va Bayaaz (The Text and the Margin).

Mr Afshar also played a central role in publishing the collected papers of Taghizadeh and was a leading figure in the journals Rahnama-ye Ketaab, Farhang-e Iran Zamin, and Ayandeh, the fourth series. The series Iranian Studies Research and The Festschrift of Dr Mahmoud Afshar also resulted from his efforts in directing the publication and printing research articles and works related to Persian literature and language. The intellectual legacy, effort and scholarly approach of Iraj Afshar in safeguarding, researching and studying the history and culture of Iran remain a lively, enduring and inspiring source.

The event took place on Monday, 10 November, at 17:00 in the Torkamaan Amphitheatre.
