Publication of IASBS graduate’s doctoral thesis results in leading international journals, including Nature family

Dr Pouria Amiri, a graduate of the doctoral programme in atomic and molecular physics in the field of optics at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Sciences (IASBS) and the top student researcher in basic sciences in Zanjan Province in 2022, has completed his doctoral thesis, entitled “Engineering diffraction structures for the optimal characterisation of optical vortices”, under the supervision of Prof Seifollah Rasouli.

Optical vortices are a category of light beams that have attracted considerable attention from researchers in recent years. These beams rotate around their own axis as they propagate, and have a fundamental property called topological charge, which plays an important role in their behaviour and applications, but cannot be measured directly with conventional imaging methods.

In this thesis, a simple and precise method for measuring this property has been proposed and examined theoretically, through simulation, and experimentally. In another part of this research, the behaviour of optical vortices in interaction with periodic diffraction structures was investigated, and phenomena such as self-imaging and the transformation of Laguerre-Gaussian beams into Hermite-Gaussian modes, in orthogonal and non-orthogonal structures, were studied. One output of this part of the research was a concept called the vertex-angle Talbot carpet, which was proposed to determine the location of self-imaging formation in non-orthogonal diffraction structures.

The results of this research have been published in 10 papers extracted from the thesis in reputable international journals in optics, including JOSA A, JOSA B, Optics Express, Optics Communications, and Communications Physics from the Nature family. One of the papers was introduced as Spotlight on Optics, and several papers were among the most-viewed articles in their respective journals in the months of publication.
