The 10th Earth Science School of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Sciences (IASBS), with the theme of “Monitoring, analysis, and application; the role of geological innovations in wealth creation and hazard control,” has commenced. The School began on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, with a gathering of faculty members, students, researchers, and activists from the field of earth sciences and industry.
At the opening ceremony, the IASBS President, Prof Sadollah Nasiri Gheydari, welcomed the students and attendees. He expressed his gratitude to the organisers of the 10th Earth Science Student School and highlighted the scientific standing and research capacities of the Department of Earth Sciences.
Pointing to the university’s history of over three decades, the IASBS President stated that the IASBS was founded by the efforts of Prof Yousef Sobouti and continues its path today as one of the country’s top universities in basic sciences with a forward-looking approach.
The IASBS President made reference to the research and laboratory infrastructure of the university and described student access to laboratories and the availability of research environments at various hours as significant features of the university, emphasising that these facilities have been provided to train capable and research-oriented students.
Prof Nasiri Gheydari said that connecting the university with industry is one of the important objectives of the institution, and considered the continuation of the Earth Science School to be an example of effective action taken in strengthening this connection. He said that the continuity of such programmes was a great strength and thanked the supporters and groups participating in the organisation of this event.
The IASBS President also referred to the experience of some reputable global universities in creating a close relationship between universities and industrial companies, emphasising the necessity of cooperation and interaction between science and industry to achieve sustainable development.
Following this ceremony, the founder of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Sciences (IASBS), Prof Yousef Sobouti, referred to the philosophy behind the formation of the university. He emphasised the importance of creating a dynamic and distinct environment for the scientific and research activities of students.
Pointing to the scientific and research atmosphere of the university and the facilities provided for students, he considered the university’s characteristics to be the result of a research-oriented perspective and mindset. In another part of his speech, he addressed the issue of elite migration and the challenges facing the scientific community of the country.
Prof Yousef Sobouti referred to the historical background of elite migration and the displacement of scientific centres in Iran, emphasising the necessity of providing suitable opportunities for the activity and growth of the country’s scientific talents.
In another part of the opening ceremony, a representative from the industry and earth sciences sector, Dr Ehsan Azizi, talked about his own experiences during his education and professional activities, emphasising the importance of the relationship between university and industry.
Referring to the extensive capacities of the country in mining and mineral industries, he said that significant capacity has been considered for the development of this sector in the 7th Development Plan, and this could create extensive opportunities for specialists and graduates of earth sciences.
He also referred to the mineral capacities of the country and examples of exploration activities in different regions, emphasising the necessity of utilising specialised knowledge and conducting precise geological studies to identify and optimally use these capacities.
The 10th Earth Science Student School begun its work with the aim of creating a bridge between the university, industry, and society, as well as familiarising students with modern earth sciences, enhancing specialised skills, becoming acquainted with industrial applications of earth sciences, and creating motivation for continuing education and professional activity. The school will continue until 28 August 2026.
The 10th Earth Science Student School is being held over four days in the form of three days of scientific lectures and specialised workshops, and one day of field operations, providing an opportunity for interaction between students, faculty members, researchers, and industry specialists in the field of earth sciences.
