I am Shiva Akbari Birgani, the assistant professor, Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Life Sciences, at Institute of Advanced Studies in Basic Sciences (IASBS). I have Ph.D. and MSc of Biochemistry. I received my Ph.D. from Tarbiat Modarres University. My Ph.D. thesis was the study of cardiomyocytic differentiation of mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs) and its comparison with apoptosis at the molecular level. My thesis was under the supervision of Professor Saman Hosseinian from Tarbiat Modarres University and Professor Hossein Baharvand from  Royan Institute.
The main focus of my research team at IASBS is the study of cancer. One of my interests is understanding the molecular mechanism determining cell fate. To take advantage of this knowledge in gene therapy and curing cancer. The other interest is the development of a suitable three-dimensional cancer model that we can use to study our proposed therapeutic approaches in conditions closer to the human body.
