Dr Abdolmahmoud Rezvani, the English translator of Saadi’s Golestan, has delivered a lecture at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Sciences (IASBS) to mark Saadi Day. He gave the lecture on Sunday, 21 April 2025.
This was the second event in the Turkmen Library Lecture Series at the IASBS, held in the university’s conference hall. Dr Rezvani’s talk addressed the challenges of translating the eloquent and refined language of Saadi. The event was attended by the IASBS President, Prof Sadollah Nasiri Gheydari, along with a number of faculty members, staff, students, and guests with an interest in Iran’s rich literary heritage.
In his talk, Dr Rezvani discussed common mistranslations into English and misconceptions among Western readers about the intricacies of Saadi’s literary and mystical expressions. He also presented selected bilingual readings from Golestan, using a number of Saadi’s fables to highlight key issues in the translation of classical Persian literature.
Dr Rezvani’s English translation of Golestan by Abu Mohammad Mosharraf al-Din Mosleh ibn Abdollah ibn Mosharraf, known by the pen name Saadi, is a poetic rendering marked by eloquence and fluency. The translation was unveiled on 5 December 2018 at the Kharazmi Library of Shiraz University with the support of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO and was subsequently published by Shiraz University Press.
